The last third of the book began with Joe being locked in by the farmer Anna because he had found out that she was holding the long disappeared Jonah prisoner in her cellar. She did that because her mind was not fully functional due to her real sons death, and she thought that Jonah was her son returning to her after all the years that had gone by since his death. After several failed escape attempts and a day of being tied to the bed in the room he finally figures out a way of escaping his cruel jailor: setting fire to the house. This (against all odds) works and the fire drew the attention of both police and firemen. After they are reunited they reestablish their old friendship.
